Children's books
Forty years ago, at a time when most bookstores had only one or two bookcases for children, we were convinced that children’s books deserved a lot more space than that! That’s why we decided to set up a store entirely devoted to children. With that, De Kinderboekwinkel in Amsterdam became the first children’s bookstore in Holland. Over the years a great number celebrities from the world of children’s books have visited us. From Annie M.G. Schmidt, the author of the much beloved stories about the Dutch characters Jip and Janneke, to the world famous Roald Dahl. When Dahl came over for a book signing in 1981, we had to block the street. And when we rented the Westerkerk for a Harry Potter night, the church was jam-packed with kids!
Today we operate two stores: one near the Anne Frank House and one near the Spui. Both stores are popular with Dutch customers, as well as with an increasing number of foreign visitors. Therefore we have widened our range to include books in different foreign languages: English, French and German. We have a large selection of titles in stock; you’ll find the biggest range in De Kinderboekwinkel 2 on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 344. From simple board books for your baby, to books suitable for 6-year-olds or the latest Young Adult books: you’ll find it all at De Kinderboekwinkel! And if you are looking for a title we do not stock, we are always happy to order it for you.
We make a point of reading (almost!) every title in our assortment, so as to be able to help and advise you in the best possible way. We know how difficult it can be to find the right book for your child from among the thousands of children’s books on offer! We also specialise in advising and assisting schools to complement the school library with the right books for the right students.
Are you looking for a children’s book in English, German or French? Then come pay us a visit at De Kinderboekwinkel and browse through our fine assortment of English, German and French children’s books.
Happy reading, everyone!
